Fashion That Makes You Go Ooh: Oscars 2019
I've been trying a few different things on the blog recently, and something I have been interested in doing since I started is looking more into the world of fashion. So what better place to start than at the Oscars, the intersection between two of my passions film and fashion! Now just to preface that these are just my opinions, I don't claim to have any authority on fashion. I've also decided to keep on the positive side because sure, there were looks I didn't like, but I'm sure others liked them and I don't want to create a space for negativity. So, here goes...
Let's begin with my top 5 suit looks:
Jenifer Lewis:
Suit: Diego Montoya
Jewellery: Kyle Chan
Shoes: Manolo Blahnik
The actor, singer and activist wore this incredible bronze and silver ensemble. What I loved about this look was firstly how powerful Jenifer Lewis looks in it, you can tell she's comfortable and confident in it. But on top of that I think the cut of the jacket is really unique and not something I have seen a lot. There was also a fair amount of metallic on the red carpet this year and I really feel like this was one of the better executed versions of metallic. The shades of silver and bronze just really make one another pop!
Sandy Powell:
Suit: Ian Frazer Wallace for Whitechapel Workhouse
The incredible costume designer who was nominated for two Oscars and just won a BAFTA for her design in The Favourite wore this amazing and beautiful suit made from fabric she chose herself from Joel& Son Fabrics in London. The cut is so different and out there and really gives an insight into Powell's personality. The way she has styled it is simplistic but elegant, also paired with a great pair of chunky, shiny trainers.
Awkwafina:
Suit: DSQUARED2
Shoes: Jimmy Choo
Jewellery: Chopard
Stylist: AVO
Hair: Anh Co Tran
Make-up: Mai Quynh
I think my favourite part of this look from the rapper and actor is the cravat. It really makes a statement along with the incredible glittered suit. I also loved how the trousers touch the ground, this is often only a feature of gowns but almost gives an extra feminine hint to the beautiful suit.
Stephen James:
Suit: Etro
The actor looked suave in this red velvet three piece suit with intricate Swarovski jewellery pieces. I especially love his lapel pin and the slightly alternative shape of his bow tie. I also think it's a rare sight to see bold colours matched with a white shoe and I think here it's working incredibly well.
Spike Lee:
Suit: Ozwold Boateng
Jewllery: Amedeo Scognamigli
Shoes: Air Jordan
This bold and beautiful suit is not only an incredible look in itself for the Oscar winner, but it is in the styling that I find real pleasure with this look. The gold Air Jordans are a great touch and the jewellery, an homage to Prince, is touching and really completes the outfit. An iconic look for an iconic man.
Now onto the gowns... I have to admit this was harder as there were so many more gowns to look at! But here are my top 5:
Billy Porter:
Gown: Christian Siriano
Jewllery: Oscar Heyman
Stylist: Sam Ratelle for RRR Creative
Grooming: Anna Bernabe
The multi talented star of Pose brings iconic fashion to everything he does and this is the look everyone is talking about. The amazing gown is a beautiful blend of masculine and feminine elements with the incredible domed skirt which I can only imagine was created using some sort of cage or crinoline. Billy knows how to serve a look and the confidence oozes off of him in every shot I've seen. Hopefully this is the beginning of many more gowns worn by all on the red carpets.
Gemma Chan:
Gown: Valentino
Shoes: Jimmy Choo
Jewellery: Bulgari
This is an incredible and impressive gown from Valentino that demands attention. The silhouette is often one we don't get the pleasure of seeing much in Western fashion and I love how it drapes elegantly around the actor. It would be very easy for someone to look swamped in this gown but Chan owns it with her incredible grace, and also shows us a wonderful extra feature of the dress in this photo: POCKETS!
Shangela:
Gown: Diego Montoya
Wig: Gypsy Wigz
Make-up: Lipsticknick
Jewellery: Lolli Cox
The drag queen and actor looks stunning in this to die for gown that pools beautifully around her. The intricate gold beading accents the incredible colour of the dress perfectly, and of course, as always, Shangela's hair and make-up is on point, she looks beautiful.
Linda Cardellini:
Gown: Bertrand Guyon for Schiaparelli
Stylist: Anna Belle Harron
The accomplished actor wore this bold piece with confidence. It got mixed reviews, but I personally love it! I think the excessive frills give the dress a wonderful movement, even in the still moments, and I think Linda looks happy and comfortable in the look. I think the contrast between the pale pink bow and the hot pink gown really work well together to create an exciting and different look.
Fatima Al Remaihi:
Sadly I can't find the designer of this amazing gown but if anyone knows please let me know as I'd love to credit them!
The CEO of Doha Film Institute looks absolutely amazing in this silky blue gown. The incredibly intricate beading and embroidery give the gown a delicate elegance and Fatima has offset the intense blue with amazing scarlet nails and a red ring. She looks stunning and graceful.
Now, there were so many incredible looks that I loved, and to be honest if I had more time I would have made this list about 50 items long! But I just wanted to add honourable mentions to both Eva Melander and Allison Janney for serving incredible looks.
Finally, I have to commend Jason Mamoa and Lisa Bonet for being the best dressed pair, their outfits complimented one another beautifully and I died a little bit when I saw the two of them in their matching pastel looks.
And I couldn't end the blog without this incredible image of two of my top looks having the best time together on the runway, I love their friendship! Hope you enjoyed this different kind of blog today and I hope this final image brings you lots of joy (Google Marie Kondo's outfit from the red carpet it rocks!)
